"Suddenly the idea, the places that seem like such a distant reach, seem possible because you know people getting into these places and already freshman year you’re thinking about this and preparing for it."

The Freshman Experience:
A Tailored Transition

Ninth grade marks the beginning of the Upper School journey and Sage Ridge students don’t take that leap alone. Through a combination of Freshman Seminar, dedicated advisory, and intentional support, students are guided to step confidently into their high school experience with the habits, mindsets, and tools they’ll need to succeed.

The year-long Freshman Seminar course—rooted in our five pillars—helps students strengthen their organization, manage time and stress, embrace challenges, and build resilience. Lessons in media literacy, critical thinking, digital citizenship, public speaking, and civic engagement prepare students not just for Upper School, but for life.

College counseling introduces students to long-term goal setting and exploration through Naviance.

Advisory groups, composed of both 9th and 10th graders, meet regularly to support the academic and personal transition into high school. Together, these experiences cultivate confident, reflective scholars who are ready to make the most of their Upper School journey.

Sage Ridge Seniors

The Senior Experience:
Capstone, Thesis & Internship

Senior year at Sage Ridge is a culmination, a capstone, and a bridge to the future. With greater independence and rigor, students are challenged to rise to college-level expectations—while still receiving the support and mentorship they need to thrive.

Academically, senior year is defined by four cornerstone experiences: History Capstone, Senior Thesis, the Research Symposium, and a Senior Internship. These integrated experiences deepen students’ research, writing, and public speaking abilities, sharpen their analytical thinking and prepare them to present ideas with clarity and conviction. Whether leading a seminar discussion, defending a 20-page thesis, or exploring a career through hands-on internship work, seniors gain the tools, confidence and real-world readiness to step into college strides ahead.

Socially, seniors are recognized as leaders of the school. Through community-building opportunities and mentorship of younger students, they learn how to direct environments for the better. By year’s end, they are ready to shape the world.

College Counseling: A Personal Roadmap

Our individualized college counseling program begins in 8th Grade and becomes increasingly focused each year, helping students identify right-fit colleges that align with their passions, goals, and strengths.

Led by our full-time Director of College Counseling, the program combines one-on-one guidance, small-group workshops, and strategic planning to ensure students and families understand the admissions landscape and are prepared for every step—from transcript review to final decision.

Sage Ridge graduates achieve remarkable results: since 2023, on average, graduating classes have earned $2.77 million in merit scholarships and aid annually, and 100% of Sage Ridge graduates are accepted to four-year colleges.

Outdoor Education & Sage Session

Big Adventures Built For Discovery

Every Sage Ridge student in grades 3–12 takes part in their own grade-level Outdoor Education Week, an unforgettable tradition that fosters courage, community, and personal growth.

Whether kayaking in California, hiking through Yosemite, or exploring Oregon whitewaters, each trip is designed to challenge students physically, mentally, and socially while building class unity and deepening their connection to nature and each other. These week-long fall adventures become core Sage Ridge memories.

In May, students in Grades 3–11 take part in Sage Session, a two-week enrichment program designed to ignite curiosity and creativity beyond the core curriculum. Led by Sage Ridge faculty, Sage Session offers immersive courses in everything from SCUBA and biking the California Coast to Nevada art, international travel, finance, and adulting 101. Our course offerings change yearly and reflect the bold, experiential learning we value most.

These signature Sage Ridge programs push students outside of their comfort zones and empower them to explore the world and discover their purpose within it.

Student Life at Sage Ridge: Culture, Community, and Leadership

From spirited dodgeball nights to stage managing the spring musical, life in the Upper School is anything but ordinary.

At Sage Ridge, student life blends fun, purpose, and possibility—where students try new things, grow as individuals, and lead in ways big and small.

Want to argue a case in a mock trial? Create your own club or event? Sing at Coffeehouse? Scorpions do it all. Students dive into a dynamic mix of arts, athletics, leadership, and extracurriculars that reflect their passions and shape a high school experience with purpose. From standout programs in theatre, visual arts, and music to award-winning teams in Speech & Debate, Mock Trial, Robotics, Junior Classical League, and more, there’s no shortage of ways to explore, compete, and express yourself.

The arts shine here. Upper School students direct, design, or perform in three theatre productions each year, including the fall play, the Upper School student-directed Lower School play, and the spring musical. Whether assisting with costumes, running lights and sound, stage managing or stepping into a lead role, Scorpions are the creative force in front of and behind the curtain. Visual and performing artists regularly compete and exhibit at the local, regional, state, and national levels, building on the technical skills, mentorship and talent nurtured by our dedicated arts faculty.

Athletics are inclusive and competitive. Our scholar-athletes and teams—including Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Golf, Basketball, Skiing, Swimming, and Track & Field—earn State Championship titles year after year. But you don’t need years of experience to join. All students are encouraged to participate and get real playing time and skill development regardless of experience.

Leadership isn’t reserved for a select few. It’s part of the culture. Students serve as prefects, team captains, club presidents, event planners, and Honor Council members. They launch initiatives, lead community service projects, and collaborate with faculty to make a lasting mark on campus.

And the best part? The community. From themed spirit days to movie nights, Scorpion Days, and school dances, life on campus is filled with shared experiences that bring everyone closer. A school counselor works closely with students, families, and faculty to support wellness and academic success, so students are thriving not just in class, but in life.

At Sage Ridge, students are known, supported, and celebrated for who they are and who they are becoming.

Your Future Starts Here

The Sage Ridge Upper School isn’t just preparation for what comes next—it’s the place where students become who they’re meant to be.

In Grades 9–12, Scorpions are challenged to think critically, lead boldly, and build the foundation for a lifetime of impact. This is where purpose takes root and futures take flight.
